Motion Analysis Laboratory
Friedrich-Alexander-Universitaet Erlangen-Nuernberg (FAU)
Overview This service provides full-body motion analysis in a stationary environment, specifically tailored for sports and complex biomechanical tasks. The facility relies on a high-precision optical motion-capture tracking volume, originally configured as an advanced golf simulator, that is adaptable to a wide range of athletic movements. By combining a dense array of infrared cameras with high-speed RGB video and inertial sensors, the laboratory captures precise 3D kinematic data. This setup enables detailed assessment of joint angles, segment velocities, and technique execution, providing structured reference data for sports science research, markerless pose estimation training, and validation of athletic wearables. How can the service help you? Developing sports performance trackers, digital coaching applications, or AI-based computer vision models for movement analysis requires precise 3D spatial data. This service provides the necessary gold-standard optical tracking data to validate external systems. Before using this facility, developers often lack the tracking accuracy needed to verify their algorithms. After using the service, clients receive highly accurate 3D coordinate data of joint centers and body segments, allowing them to calculate error margins in their own hardware or software solutions and ensure compliance with relevant performance or medical standards. How will the service be delivered? The service is executed physically at the laboratory facilities in Erlangen, Germany. Sessions are structured around the specific sports movement or biomechanical task being analyzed. The engineering team handles camera calibration, retroreflective marker placement on the participant (if optical tracking is used), and system synchronization. Following the capture session, the 3D marker trajectories are reconstructed, cleaned, and exported for the client. Additional information Provider description Operating under the Department of Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Engineering at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, this facility is a service-provider node within the TEF-Health consortium. The research group focuses on machine learning, biomechanical modeling, and digital health. The team provides testing environments and methodological support for evaluating medical devices and health technologies. Technical details The laboratory uses a hybrid optical-inertial tracking setup optimized for fast, complex movements. Optical Tracking System: The core motion-capture volume (the golf-simulator setup) uses 12 Vicon infrared cameras for precise 3D marker tracking, complemented by 2 Vicon RGB cameras for synchronized high-speed video recording and visual reference. Inertial Tracking: 10x Vicon BlueTrident IMUs are available to track movements outside the optical volume or to provide hybrid optical-inertial data for algorithm training. Auxiliary Equipment: A dedicated camera (Maike) is available for additional recording angles, and 2x Apple iPhone SE 2022 devices are used to test mobile applications. Software: Data acquisition and reconstruction are handled via Vicon software. Agisoft Metashape Pro is available for advanced photogrammetry and 3D environment/subject modeling. Standards: Procedures and data management can align with Medical Device Regulations EU/2017/745 for relevant clinical applications. Service customization The capture volume and sensor configuration are fully customizable. Clients can define specific marker sets (from minimal lower-body sets to full-body anatomical models) depending on the movement being analyzed. The service can also be configured to collect synchronous optical and IMU data to help developers train sensor-fusion algorithms.
