Join the Independent Review Board
Join the TEF-Health Independent Review Board and assess the companies that apply for TEF-Health services.
About 30 minutes per review You set your workload Pro bono

TEF-Health, the Testing and Experimentation Facility for Health AI and Robotics, helps companies bring AI and robotics solutions for healthcare to market faster by testing and validating them. SMEs from all EU member states receive these services at reduced prices, awarded through open calls. The Independent Review Board assesses the merit and fit of every application these calls receive, and we invite experts from research, clinical practice and industry to join it.

The aim of your review

You judge whether a company's AI or robotics solution is of sound quality and fits what TEF-Health offers. Two independent reviews are the external check that State aid requires.

Your review is advice. You do not decide on the application or the discount. Once two reviews are in, the company and the service providers can sign a contract at the reduced price.

What reviewers do

  • For every application you declare that you have no conflict of interest. If you have one, you decline the assignment and it goes to another reviewer.
  • You assess applications from SMEs against the call criteria: the quality of the AI or robotics solution and its fit to TEF-Health.
  • You score each application on the evaluation form in the TEF-Health platform, criterion by criterion.
  • You do not re-check eligibility: applicants confirm it themselves when they apply.

Who we are looking for

Experts with experience in one or more of these areas:

  • Healthtech: digital health, medical devices, diagnostics, biotech
  • Medicine: any medical domain, from radiology, cardiology and oncology to neurology, rehabilitation and primary care
  • AI and robotics: machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, robotics, software engineering, AI ethics
  • Business and law: business models, health investment, intellectual property, legal affairs, R&D and project management

You do not need to work for a TEF-Health partner organisation. Independent experts are welcome.

Time and commitment

  • A review takes about 30 minutes.
  • Each review is due two weeks after it is assigned to you, and you can extend the deadline once, by five days.
  • You decide how many applications you hold at once, and you answer each request within seven days.
  • When you need a break, you can pause yourself for new reviews instead of stepping down.
  • The role is pro bono: reviewers are not paid.

How to join

Becoming a reviewer
From your account to your first review. A coordinator accepts you once the contract you signed and the copy Charité countersigned are both on record. Each step links to its page.
  1. Create a free account on the TEF-Health platform, or sign in if you already have one.
  2. Send your request to become a reviewer. The form asks for your country, your institution if you have one, a LinkedIn, ORCID or ResearchGate profile, your areas of expertise and how many applications you can review at once. You confirm that you agree to the Code of Conduct.
  3. Sign the Expert Contract. It opens to you as soon as your request is in. Fill in your name and address, sign it and upload it as one PDF on your reviewer documents page: a scan of the pages you signed by hand, or the PDF signed electronically. A phone's scanner app saves a scan as PDF. The upload is all your request needs. Please also post the signed original to the executing unit named on the contract: BIH, AG Petra Ritter, Robert-Koch-Platz 4, 10115 Berlin.
  4. Start reviewing. Once Charité has countersigned your contract, a coordinator accepts your request and you receive a welcome email with the link to your review dashboard.
